US airport reliability map

The 64 airports FlyerIntel covers, placed where they are, from 17,368,992 scheduled departures, July 2023 – June 2026. Each dot is an airport: its area follows how many flights left it, and its colour shows where it ranks among the 64 on the measure selected below. Blue is the better end, orange the worse, grey the middle. Hover, focus or tap a dot for its numbers.

On the reliability score the airports run from 82 at HNL to 49 at DFW, with a median of 66.

How to read the map

What the colour, the size and the placement do and do not say.

  • Colour is a rank position, not a grade. The airports are cut into five bands of about equal size on whichever measure is selected, so the grey middle band is the middle of these 64 airports, not a standard they met. The legend prints the exact range each band covers. Because the cuts follow the data, the same colour means a different range on each measure.
  • Dot area is departures. It follows the flights that left each airport in the period, from 11,372 at ABE to 984,179 at ATL. Every airport shown clears the 5,000-departure floor FlyerIntel requires before it publishes an airport’s rates.
  • Figures describe departing flights. An airport’s on-time, cancellation and delay rates cover the flights that left it, with lateness measured when each flight arrived. A late arrival can trace to the origin, the destination or the aircraft’s earlier legs; the airport’s own page breaks the figures down further.
  • Alaska, Hawaii and Puerto Rico are insets. They are moved to the lower corners, as on any standard US statistical map, and Alaska is drawn at 35% of its true scale, so distances compare only within the lower 48. Zooming to a region frames the airports in it; the insets appear on the whole-US view.

By region

Totals pooled over every departure at each region’s airports, so a busy hub counts for what it carries. Regions are US Census Bureau regions; Puerto Rico is in none and stands alone.

By pooled on-time rate the West is highest at 80.3% and the South lowest at 76.8%, 3.5 points apart. Regions here are sets of airports, not routes, so they show where delays were recorded and not what a flight across the region will meet.

Source: FlyerIntel analysis of US DOT BTS data · July 2023 – June 2026 · On time = arrivals under 15 minutes late ÷ completed flights; cancelled = cancelled ÷ scheduled; severe = 60+ minutes late ÷ completed. See what “on time” means.

What this does not show. It is a record of July 2023 – June 2026, not a forecast, and it ranks airports against each other rather than against an absolute standard. It says nothing about a particular airline, route or time of day; those have their own breakdowns on the rankings and on each airport’s page.
