Taxi Time: The Ground Tax on Every Flight
Travellers budget for flight time and ignore the time spent on the ground at each end. On flights under 500 miles between major US airports, 30.1% of the scheduled journey is spent on the ground with the wheels turning.

Summary
Across 13,550,769 flights between the 61 airports FlyerIntel covers, the average scheduled journey spends 27.0 minutes taxiing — 18.3 minutes from the gate to the runway at the origin and 8.7 minutes from the runway to the gate at the destination. That is 16.5% of scheduled gate-to-gate time spent on the ground rather than in the air. On flights under 500 miles it is 30.1%: 26.3 minutes of taxi inside a scheduled trip of 87.3 minutes. And it is not evenly charged — a departure from JFK taxis 27.2 minutes on average against 12.5 at STL, a gap of 14.7 minutes that appears on no ticket.
Key findings
- The average flight between covered airports spends 27.0 minutes taxiing, 16.5% of its scheduled gate-to-gate time.
- Under 500 miles the share is 30.1%; beyond 2,500 miles it is 8.2%. The taxi itself changes little — 26.3 minutes against 30.7 — while the flight wrapped around it grows from 87 minutes to 375.
- Connecting through ORD adds 43.0 minutes of taxiing to an itinerary: 17.7 in, then 25.4 out again. Through PHX, 23.4 minutes.
- JFK has the most hour-dependent taxi of the airports measured: 18.6 minutes at 05:00 against 34.1 at 19:00.
- ORD–MKE is 67 miles, scheduled at 59.7 minutes gate to gate, of which 37.2 are taxi — 62.3% of the journey.
What taxi time is, and where it hides
Two numbers on every US flight record describe time spent on the ground with the aircraft under its own power. Taxi-out is the interval between the aircraft leaving the gate and the wheels leaving the runway; taxi-in is between the wheels touching down and the aircraft reaching its arrival gate. Neither is a delay. Both sit inside the scheduled block time an airline publishes, so a flight can taxi for half an hour and still arrive early. That is what makes taxi invisible: it never appears as a problem, it is never shown when you book, and it is subtracted from your day regardless.

The connection nobody prices
An airport charges taxi twice: once to everything that leaves it, and once to everything that lands. Add the two together and you have the exact amount of taxiing a connection through that airport adds to a journey, over and above the nonstop. ORD (Chicago) is the most expensive of the ten busiest airports on that measure at 43.0 minutes; PHX (Phoenix) is the cheapest at 23.4. The 19.6-minute difference between them is time you spend belted into a seat that is not going anywhere, and it is charged before the connection itself has started. The two halves behave differently, too: taxi-out runs from 12.5 minutes at STL to 27.2 at JFK, while taxi-in runs from 4.1 at SJC to 17.7 at ORD. Leaving costs more than arriving at all 61 airports measured; the usual explanation is that a departure has to wait its turn in a queue for the runway and an arrival does not.

The first bank of the day taxis fastest
Weighted by where flights actually are, taxi-out is lowest at 05:00 at 14.8 minutes and highest at 08:00 at 19.9 — 5.1 minutes of difference across the same set of airports. The national curve is gentle because it averages airports with very different days together. At the airport level the swing is much larger: JFK ranges from 18.6 minutes at 05:00 to 34.1 at 19:00, while JAX varies by only 2.0 minutes across its whole day.

Scheduled departure hour in local time. An hour counts only where the airport recorded at least 2,000 departures in it, and an airport appears only where at least twelve hours clear that bar.
What this is not
Across the 61 covered airports the correlation between an airport's average taxi-out and its on-time arrival rate is -0.15 — weak. Airports with long taxi times are not markedly less punctual than airports with short ones, which is what you would expect if the taxi is already inside the published schedule. It takes your time rather than making you late, and that is precisely why nobody notices it. The hourly pattern is not proof that congestion alone drives taxi time. Taxi is partly geometry — how far the gate you leave from sits from the runway in use — and the runway in use changes with the wind, which changes through the day and across the seasons. The mix of airlines, gates, aircraft types and destinations also changes hour by hour, and this data cannot separate any of that from queueing. ATL has more scheduled departures than any other airport here and its taxi-out moves only 3.8 minutes between its best and worst hour, while JFK moves 15.5. Raw size is not the explanation. What the figures do establish is narrower and still useful: at these airports, in these hours, aircraft spent these many minutes on the ground.

What to do with this
Three things follow. If a short trip has a driving alternative, compare it against the scheduled gate-to-gate time rather than against the flying time, because a large part of the schedule is already a slow drive across an airfield. If you are choosing between two connecting itineraries, the hub with the shorter combined ground time hands you back the difference for free, and at a slow-taxi hub the connection you were sold is shorter than it looks on paper, because taxi-in happens before you can start walking. And if you have a choice of departure hour at one of the airports in the table above, the early bank is usually the one that reaches the runway quickest.
Methodology
Calculated by FlyerIntel from 21,076,354 individual flight records in the US Department of Transportation Bureau of Transportation Statistics Reporting Carrier On-Time Performance dataset, covering July 2023 through June 2026. Following BTS methodology, a flight counts as delayed when it arrives 15 or more minutes after its scheduled arrival time. Cancelled and diverted flights have no arrival time and are excluded from on-time rates rather than counted as late; cancellation rates are reported separately. Full definitions are published at /methodology/. Taxi-out is the carrier-reported interval between gate departure and wheels off, averaged over every departure from an airport; taxi-in is between wheels on and gate arrival, averaged over every arrival. Scheduled gate-to-gate time is reconstructed for each flight from its published local departure and arrival clock times converted to a common instant using each airport's timezone, which limits that part of the analysis to the 13,550,769 flights flown between the 61 airports FlyerIntel covers, the only ones for which a timezone is held; records whose reconstructed gate-to-gate time fell outside 20 to 900 minutes are discarded as unreadable. Cancelled and diverted flights are excluded, since neither has a complete pair of taxi times. Hourly figures are computed from summed counts across airports rather than by averaging rates, so busy airports carry proportionate weight, and an hour appears for an airport only where it recorded at least 2,000 departures. Routes are published only above the site's 750-flight threshold.
Limitations
The source dataset covers scheduled domestic flights operated by carriers above the DOT reporting threshold; smaller carriers and international flights are not included. Flights sold under a mainline brand but flown by a regional carrier are attributed to the operating carrier, which is how the DOT records them. Past performance describes what has happened and is not a prediction about any individual flight. Taxi times are the ones carriers report to the DOT, and they bundle together queueing for a runway, waiting for a gate, de-icing and the plain distance from the stand to the pavement without distinguishing between them. Every figure here is an average across three years, all gates and all runway configurations at an airport; your own taxi depends on which gate you use and which runway is in use that day, neither of which this dataset records. Scheduled gate-to-gate time is reconstructed from published clock times, so the hour on which clocks change is handled approximately. And because taxi sits inside the schedule rather than outside it, a long taxi is a cost in time, not evidence that a flight will be late.
