America's Most Reliable Major Airports

Which large US airports actually get travellers where they are going on schedule.

Published August 29, 2026 · Source period July 2023June 2026

Summary

HNL (Honolulu) is the most reliable major US airport in FlyerIntel's analysis, scoring 82 out of 100 on 181,188 departures with 85.4% arriving on time. DFW (Dallas–Fort Worth) ranks last of the 58 airports measured at 49. The spread between them — 12.1 percentage points of on-time performance — is larger than the gap between the best and worst major airline.

Key findings

  • HNL leads with a reliability score of 82 and 85.4% on-time arrivals.
  • DFW ranks last at 49, with 73.3% on-time and 2.30% of flights cancelled.
  • SLC had the lowest cancellation rate at 0.59%.
  • LGA had the highest at 3.14%.
  • The largest hubs are not the most reliable: size and punctuality are close to unrelated in this data.

What separates the top from the bottom

The airports at the top of this table share a structural advantage: schedules that leave room in them. Where an airport is scheduled close to its practical capacity, any single disruption — a weather cell, a runway closure, a late inbound aircraft — has nowhere to be absorbed and propagates through the rest of the day. The airports at the bottom are not badly run; they are running with less slack, often in more congested airspace, and the data reflects that rather than any failure of operation.

Methodology

Calculated by FlyerIntel from 21,076,354 individual flight records in the US Department of Transportation Bureau of Transportation Statistics Reporting Carrier On-Time Performance dataset, covering July 2023 through June 2026. Following BTS methodology, a flight counts as delayed when it arrives 15 or more minutes after its scheduled arrival time. Cancelled and diverted flights have no arrival time and are excluded from on-time rates rather than counted as late; cancellation rates are reported separately. Full definitions are published at /methodology/. The Airport Reliability Score combines on-time rate, cancellation rate, severe delay rate, median arrival delay, average delay when late and 90th-percentile delay, each normalised against fixed reference points and weighted as published at /methodology/#reliability. Only airports with at least 5,000 departures are scored.

Limitations

The source dataset covers scheduled domestic flights operated by carriers above the DOT reporting threshold; smaller carriers and international flights are not included. Flights sold under a mainline brand but flown by a regional carrier are attributed to the operating carrier, which is how the DOT records them. Past performance describes what has happened and is not a prediction about any individual flight. Rankings compare the airports FlyerIntel covers, not every US airport.
